Stiven Mrkela (also sometimes called Stivan or Steve) is a defender who played two seasons with South Melbourne.

Before joining South Melbourne, Mrkela had been a Victorian Premier League mainstay, and a core member of the strong Altona Magic sides during the early 2000s (where he had also played as part of their National Youth League side).[1] However, even though Magic had won the title in 2008, Mrkela had missed most of that season, playing no games after April.[2]

Still, at only 27, South must have thought it worth the risk in signing such a well credentialed player.[3] Mrkela however was never able to shake off his injury concerns, playing only eleven matches in 2009, and just six more in 2010, before joining Clifton Hill in State League 1.[4]
