Malcolm Ian MacDonald, nicknamed Supermac, was one of the most prolific forwards in 1970s English football as a player for Newcastle and Arsenal.

He played three games as a guest for South Melbourne Hellas during the middle of the 1977 National Soccer League season, scoring on debut against West Adelaide[1], playing at home against Brisbane Lions[2] and most notably against St George (which fielded former Arsenal star Charlie George as a guest), which drew a capacity crowd to Middle Park, providing a rare high point to an otherwise poor season for South.[3] A reported fourth appearance against Canberra City[4] did not eventuate.

In an article on MacDonand's guest stint, historian Damian Smith noted that:

"After completing the then English 1st division season with Arsenal, MacDonald was lured to Australia. Arsenal were about to embark on a end of season tour of the Asia and he thought that it would be a great opportunity to see another country and keep up his fitness in the off-season.  South ensured him for $500,000, with South and the three clubs that would face the striker, chipping in to help pay the $10,000 premium."[5]

Trivia Edit

Back in 1970, MacDonald had played and scored against Jack Reilly, one of his temporary South Melbourne Hellas team mates, when Supermac's then club side Luton Town played a match against a touring Socceroos side. That side featured not only Reilly, but also Jim Mackay and future South coach Rale Rasic, who was then coaching the Socceroos.[6]

MacDonald's appearance in the round 6 match against St George was covered in Offsider, the football memoir of journalist Patrick Mangan.
