Hellenic was one of the three clubs which merged to form South Melbourne Hellas. In August 1959 Hellenic and Yarra Park merged, forming 'Hellas', Hellas amalgamated with South Melbourne United - likely sometime in early 1960 - to complete the formation of South Melbourne Hellas. Its home strip was at one point a white jersey with blue stripes, white shorts, and blue and white hooped socks.

Despite never winning a league title, Hellenic's first three seasons saw it win promotion twice, reaching the Victorian State league in 1958, only to be relegated in its first season.
