When Angelo Lekkas, a 180 game veteran of the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League, had chosen to retire in 2005 due the complications of a minor stroke he'd suffered in a practice match[1], heads were turned when he appeared at South Melbourne training in early 2006. Lekkas had been a boyhood fan of South Melbourne Hellas, but the ambition to play second tier soccer seemed far-fetched not so much for the cross codal aspect - Lekkas had been a junior soccer player - but because at the same time as he was training with South, he was also suing Hawthorn for being pressured to play despite his condition[2] (a matter later reputedly settled out of court).

While Lekkas never made it onto the field for South Melbourne at a senior level, he is known to have played at least one game as an overage player for the under 21s, coming on as a substitute in the final 25 minutes in a 4-0 loss against Fawkner-Whittlesea.[3]
