Summary[]
South Melbourne Hellas' first attempt at the Australia Cup saw them give up a 1-0 half time lead against Sydney's Yugal, the eventual winners of the inaugural Australia Cup. Hellas dominated proceedings early on, but a general timidity saw them fail to make the most of their dominant play. Despite Hellas leading 1-0 at half time thanks to a George Papadopoulos goal - the club's first in the competition - Yugal fought back, equalising from the spot, and then taking the lead. Being behind failed to galvanise the home side, which was knocked out of the tournament.
